Ice Beacons
The world's first iBeacon enabled freezer clip which reminds busy parents that they have McCain wedges in the freezer through a voucher incentivised app.
CLIENT McCAIN YEAR 2015 ROLE CREATIVE DIRECTOR
The original brief was to encourage mum's (and dad's) to serve potato wedges on a Saturday night with the family. Research suggested they were being bought for mid week teas, but sat neglected in the freezer.
SMARTER IDEA
Alongside more traditional channel comms, I pushed the client with an idea about creating a piece of tech that solved the problem directly. Tech that was useful to the consumer ie. a freezer clip but also created a new conversation channel via the McCain app.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Come X-Factor on the telly, the clip wakes up from its deep freeze, and sends a reminder message to the smart phone app.
Below are the working prototypes of the clips, 3D printed in house and powered by bluetooth chips in the main section. It took a lot of testing to get over the battery issues at minus temperatures, but they are fully functional and ready for production.
A BIGGER ISSUE
In the UK seven million tonnes of food is thrown away every year, a large amount is discarded from home freezers, unlabelled, undated, forgotten. These clips could prove a valuable solution to reducing this waste.
